A MUM has set up an Amazon wish list to make sure her son’s school is fully stocked.

Laura Felton joined the PTA at St Michael’s Primary School where her son Ted, five, attends.

It was not her school of choice as the family lives in Old Heath Road, but Mrs Felton and her husband Ben immersed themselves in the school community.

The military school, in Camulodunum Way, Colchester, is due to expand to allow for a second intake.

However, there is no money left to buy resources.

Now Mrs Felton and other parents want to make sure the school has everything children could need and have set up an online wish list.

She said: “About 85 per cent of the budget goes to staff and the other 15 per cent goes on electricity.

“There is no budget to fill the new building, it’s going to be beautiful but some classrooms could be completely empty.

“If I can ask the school exactly what they want, people can purchase it.” A consultation was held in May on the plans for the new wing, and it is hoped the building will be in use by September 2018.

The school has 240 pupils already and Mrs Felton wants to make sure both new and current students have enough equipment to use.

So far, she said there has been a great response from parents who have bought items for the school.

Laura has already purchased 50 footballs for her son’s reception year using her own money.

She hopes the wider community could be just as generous, in time for when the new wing opens. According to plans it will have six classrooms, a food tech room, a small hall and a kitchen.

Items on the wish list include outdoor games, books and pens.

Laura added: “Tesco has been brilliant, we are getting on the token scheme which is dedicated to resources for the new library which will be part of the expansion.”

The PTA, which meets at the school, is organising a number of events such to raise money.

Mrs Felton said: “It’s a shame as it’s a good school and I’m sure there are other schools who are the in the same boat.”

Headteacher Gail Burns said the school has received about £500 worth of gifts so far.

She said: “Governors were explaining to parents the school budgets are exceptionally tight.

“Some of the parents said they were not happy as they wanted to the children to be enriched by the expansion. We are very grateful for the wishlist.”
