FITNESS fanatics turned out in force for a free family fun day at Clacton Leisure Centre.

Around 700 people of all ages descended upon the Valence Way site for the event on Sunday.

Those taking part in the outdoor activities enjoyed a baking hot five hours while others took shade inside the various halls and pool in the centre.

There was the opportunity to have a go at badminton, basketball, table tennis, short tennis and family tennis with taster sessions in boxing, basketball, walking netball, gymnastics and karate.

Council leisure boss Lynda McWilliams said she was impressed with the turnout despite the hot weather.

“It was certainly more of a day to head to the beach, but we had an excellent attendance for the free family fun day at Clacton Leisure Centre.

“There were all ages taking part from a one-year-old on the bouncy castle to the slightly older gentlemen competing in the walking football tournament.”

Mrs McWilliams added that she hoped that trying out some of the sessions will encourage people to take up sport and other activities on a regular basis.

“For some it may have been their first visit to the leisure centre and it would be great if they come back and enjoy healthier lifestyles and improve their well-being on an on-going basis.”

The day also included a walking football tournament, a netball rally, a cheerleading display and spinning.

A family Zumba session was laid on along with various fun sessions in the swimming pool, face painting, kids' art and refreshments.

Members of Clacton Hockey Club were also outside on the all-weather surface putting on a display and hoping to attract new members.
