AN injured driver allegedly made off from the scene of a crash after the car he was driving overturned in Clacton.

Emergency services were called to the crash in St Osyth Road shortly before 10.10am.

The incident happened at the road's junction with Jameson Road.

The driver suffered minor injuries during the collision, but he made off from the scene before police arrived.

It is understood that the black Fiat Punto had been in collision with a parked car. The Fiat ended up on its roof.

Melanie Cloke, from Clacton, said: "My husband was driving me to the doctors and saw in his mirror the black Punto hit a parked gold Mondeo and flipped.

"My husband turned the car round to go make sure everyone was OK while I called for help.

"The man in the van who was coming the other way up the road helped the young bloke out of the car made sure he was OK.

"He was bleeding a little from his right arm but kept saying 'I'm fine. I don't need help'.

"Then he reached back into the car grabbed something and ran off.

"The blokes in the van stayed and were stopping traffic until the police got there."

The car was removed and the road was reopened by 12.30pm.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: "Officers received calls that a black Fiat Punto had overturned and was blocking the road.

"The male driver left the scene with minor injuries. Enquiries are ongoing."

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service added: "An ambulance crew was dispatched, but stood down as the patient was not on scene."
