A SPECIAL heart screening session in memory of a teenager who died suddenly from a heart attack while playing football has been opened up to the public.

Holland FC have organised a special heart screening for young footballers via the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young.

The screening is taking place in memory of Jack Atkinson, 18, from Clacton, who was playing for Holland FC Under-18s on November 14 when he collapsed on the pitch.

Mark Sorrell, chairman of the club, said youngsters from football clubs across the area have signed up to have their hearts scanned.

The sessions will take place at Bishop’s Park College site in Jaywick Lane on July 8 and 9.

“There are still places available so we are now opening it up to the public. It’s open to people between the ages of 14 to 35.

"I would advise any young people involved in sport to sign up to be screened to help pick up any heart problems early.

"For the sake of ten minutes you could discover a previously undetected heart condition, potentially saving your life.

“Jack’s death affected the whole club and we are doing this in his memory.

“We would be happy if we don’t find anyone with a heart defect but if we find someone who has a heart problem it could help to prevent another tragedy.”

Mr Sorrell thanked Tony Armstrong, from Harwich, for donating the money for the screening.

Mr Armstrong launched the Marcus Armstrong Fund after his 28-year-old son, a keen golfer, died suddenly in 2006 from an undetected heart condition.
