THOUSANDS of pounds worth of damage has been caused to a town centre nightspot after a car lost control and crashed.

The vehicle left Glebe Way, in Jaywick, and turned left towards the Eldo Bar, on Broadway.

A female driver, believed to be in her 40s, mistakenly pressed the wrong pedal and collided into the venue's wall.

Ambulance crews and police officers attended the collision at about 3.30pm yesterday. No arrests were made.

A female passenger and young child were also in the car.

Steve Garrett, owner of the Jaywick music venue, said: "A bus was coming the other way as she came down the road so she pulled over slightly to let the bus go but as she's gone to brake, she's hit the wrong pedal and pressed the accelerator.

"She's hit the back of my car, mounted the pavement, took out two of the big steel posts and ended up in the wall at the end.

"Everyone in the car was fine, no-one was injured that's the main thing.

"She did everything right and they were all strapped in with seatbelts."

Mr Garrett reports nobody was treated for further injuries but that the driver was shaken up.

He added: "It's just very lucky it wasn't bank holiday Monday because there were 25 to 30 people outside because of a charity event.

"I reckon there's a good few thousand pounds worth of damage to the building but it's hard to tell at this stage.

"In August we have a music festival planned. Last year 2,000 people arrived which is why we had the steel posts put in the roof where the bands play so whether they can be repaired in that time, I don't know.

"But otherwise it hasn't affected us."

The Eldo Bar remained open for business.
