RESIDENTS in Harwich have backed the idea of creating an outdoor gym at a popular park.

Of 107 people who filled out a survey on the initiative, 80 said they would definitely use the facility which would be based at Dovercourt’s Cliff Park.

There were a further 19 maybes - and only eight of those responding said they would not use it.

The consultation was undertaken by Tendring Council, which is investigating the idea and is expected to cost in the region of £20,000.

The council is looking at what type of equipment would be best suited for the site and plans are well-advanced with a funding package also being put together.

Lynda McWilliams, Tendring Council’s cabinet member for leisure, said: “From the survey we have carried out it certainly seems there is overwhelming support for an outdoor gym at Cliff Park and that gives us the mandate to continue with our efforts to try to turn this into a reality.

“It is the ideal opportunity to help improve people’s wellbeing and promote a healthier lifestyle.”

More than half those who responded said that they were likely to use it on a weekly basis, and almost a quarter would visit daily.

Essex County Council Public Health will pay £10,000 towards the scheme and the rest will need to be found from other sources.

Cassie Barrett, Tendring’s Public Health Improvement Co-ordinator, was already looking into the idea when the council was approached by town councillors and the Harwich Crime Prevention Panel.

Ivan Henderson “I’m really pleased to see this come forward after being contacted about it by local residents.

“The Harwich Park Run has been really popular and local people want more facilities there, including for adults.

“This will be a marvellous addition to our beautiful park.”

Tendring Council said quotes have already been obtained from three companies and the aim is to look to have equipment in place later this year.

Cabinet member Nick Turner added: “It is all about tying up the finances and deciding what sort of equipment we need to provide for people to get the best use out of it."
