BOOKWORMS swapped school uniforms for costumes as they got into the spirit of World Book Day.

Children at nurseries, primary and secondary schools took inspiration from their favourite figures in literature for the national celebration of reading yesterday.

Little Red Riding Hood, Cruella de Vil and Goldilocks and the Three Bears were among the characters to appear at Unity Primary Academy in Colchester,

Charlotte Booth-Rylett, head of school, said: “Learners at Unity Primary Academy have had a spectacular World Book Day.

“Children have spent the day dressed as their favourite literary characters and shared their favourite books with their friends. Last January, we set a school new year’s resolution to read more and, since then, the reading culture has transformed.

“Our in-school library is now an exceptional resource and every class takes part in a reading race celebrating reading certificates. We have developed strong links with Greenstead Library and with Colchester United to develop our reading ethos.”

The Greenstead school is also frequently visited by authors and has set up themed reading areas around the school.
