FOOTBALLERS battled for glory in their quest to be crowned national champions.

Eighteen teams took part in the five-a-side event at PlayFootball, in Sheepen Road, as part of the FA People’s Cup.

City Supporters, managed by Mark Proud, were the eventual winners and they now progress to the London North and East round.

However, they to do it the hard way - holding their nerve to win a penalty shoot-out in the final, prevailing 5-4 against Layer Fox after the match finished 2-2.

The two losing semi-finalists were MAW FC - the team spearheaded by well-known Colchester non-league player Ray Turner - and CO4.

"It was a really good day," said PlayFootball general manager Lorcan Webb.

"The standard of football was superb and all the matches were keenly-contested.

"The teams also showed great sportsmanship and there was no aggro whatsoever.

"In addition, the weather was kind to us and the event was well-run and organised.

"We couldn't have asked for anything more."

The FA People’s Cup features male, female and disability players across 16 categories, ranging from under-14s through to veterans (over-35s).

It is the biggest five-a-side event in the country and run in partnership with the BBC's Get Inspired campaign.

It was formed in 2015. In its first year over 30,000 people took part and last year the figure was closer to 35,000.
