THE leader of a charity which gives fresh opportunities to ex-offenders has received national recognition for his work.

Pete Hope, of GO4 Enterprises, was recognised in the Great British High Street Awards.

He was one of 12 individuals, teams and schemes across the country to receive a special recognition commendation from High Streets Minister Andrew Percy for his work at GO4 Market Café.

Mr Hope’s homeless charity runs the market cafe in Trinity Street, Colchester, which aims to employ the homeless and previous offenders and reintroduce them to society.

He said: “On behalf of the staff, volunteers, traders, past and present, at GO4 Market Cafe, we gratefully accept the award. It’s encouraging to have our efforts recognised at a national level.

“We operate in a unique, but difficult, environment in the centre of town and know many people from a marginalised background have found acceptance here on their way back into the community via our efforts.

“It is a clear example of how a social enterprise can assist in inclusion, regeneration, and contribute positively to the community.”

Mr Percy said: “The success of our high streets in boosting local economies and creating and protecting jobs relies on the support of an army of traders and volunteers.

“Pete Hope and the other special recognition award winners are fantastic examples of people who give their all - day in and day out - to make our communities better places to live, work and socialise, as well as shop.

“I’d like to commend Pete for his fantastic contribution and thank him for all his hard work in Colchester.”

Mr Hope is in “ongoing dialogue” with Colchester Council over potentially staying at Holy Trinity Church, despite giving notice to leave the historic building last year.
