UPSET residents have been left counting the cost after fireworks caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to their conservatory roofs.

Two homeowners from Holland-on-Sea and Clacton have both had firework cases crash through a panel on their conservatory roofs.

In the past week, the residents of both homes have been told that their whole conservatory roof will need replacing and it will cost thousands of pounds.

Barbara Mariner, who lives with her husband John in Holland-on-Sea, said assessors have estimated their conservatory roof will cost £2,500 to repair.

She said: “I saw something on the conservatory roof a few weeks ago and thought it was one of my husband’s tools and I asked him to get a ladder and have a look.

“When he climbed up the ladder he saw that it was a rocket case which had got stuck in the roof and damaged one of the panels by causing a two to three inch hole.”

The couple called a window and conservatory installer and were informed that the whole roof would need replacing as the same polycarbon panels are no longer in supply.

Barbara and John are now waiting to see if they have insurance to cover help cover the expense.

Barbara said: “I just wish to say to people that they should think twice before deciding on fireworks in their garden as it could cost somebody a lot of money.”

A similar incident happened to an elderly resident, of Clacton.

The resident’s daughter, Linda Stickland, 59, received a bill for £5,000 to cover the repair costs of her father’s conservatory roof after a rocket case hit though it.

Linda visits her father in Clacton once a week and discovered the six-inch hole in his conservatory roof when she visited him.

She said: “I think this incident has reiterated fireworks are extremely dangerous and this has been proven by the damage it has caused to my father’s conservatory roof.

“I’m just glad that no-one was in the conservatory when it happened and luckily the firework did not hit a person as it could have seriously hurt or killed someone.”

Assessors confirmed to Linda the whole roof of the conservatory will need repairing as the original roof panels are no longer in supply.

Linda added: “Luckily we are fully covered by the insurance company.”
