COLCHESTER MP Will Quince looks set to become the first in the country to hold regular advice surgeries in a fast-food restaurant.
Mr Quince will hold his first open morning at the McDonald’s, in Cowdray Avenue, Colchester, on Saturday between 8am and 10am.
He says the unique move is in a bid to reach more constituents, who would not ordinarily book a formal appointment at his constituency office, in Layer Road.
It is also in addition to a monthly surgery in Asda, in Turner Rise.
The Conservative MP said: “I really wanted to make myself accessible to as many people as possible.
“There are people who are comfortable and prefer making appointments in advance, but a lot of people don’t do that but may still have issues which they want to raise with me.
“Being in McDonald’s once a month has got to help that.
“It is a place where people go with their families, perhaps after having been at Leisure World, so I know there will be people there at the very least.”
He also said he hoped the surgery would remain informal, adding: “It will be me in the restaurant sipping a coffee or even having a McDonald’s breakfast - there will be no airs and graces.
“If people have a problem and they don’t have time to book an appointment, this is a great place to catch me.”
The move comes after Mr Quince spent a morning behind the scenes at the Cowdray Avenue restaurant on Saturday.
McDonald’s franchise holder Craig Newnes said: “I’ve got to know Will quite a bit over the last few months with a variety of things going on.
“He came in on Saturday and got a flavour of the place and both of us were quite keen for the surgeries to go ahead.
“It’s hopefully a quite accessible place for residents and it’s very informal, which will help a lot of people.”
Mr Quince is also in the throes of negotiating a monthly slot in Tesco, in Highwoods.
The Tory is not the first MP to try his hand at a fast-food surgery.
Thurrock MP Jackie Doyle-Price held a one-off event in Tilbury in 2014 while Dartford MP Gareth Johnson also held one event last year.
