SCHOOLS across the county are set to shut tomorrow due to a teachers' strike.
A total of 77 schools under Essex County Council control have so far confirmed their classrooms will close while members of the National Union of Teachers stage their first walkout since 2014.
Some schools in unitary authorities Southend and Thurrock have also announced closures.
Teachers are set to strike in a bid to address school funding and to resume negotiations on teacher contracts.
As a result, thousands of children will miss out on a day's education.
Ray Gooding, county councillor for responsible for education and lifelong learning, said: “The decision whether to close schools as a result of industrial action rests solely with individual headteachers.
“While many maintained schools and academies will notify the council if they are closing, academies are not required to and schools are responsible for notifying parents.
“School closures for the following day will appear online at http://www.essex.gov.uk/education-schools/schools/dates/pages/emergency-school-closures.aspx from 6pm.”
