AN adult education charity has honoured three learners for their achievements.

Colchester Adult Learning Assistance's annual Festival of Learning saw a number of adult learners put forward for a the awards.

But CALA bosses chose three particularly inspirational people to take the top spots.

Mark Grenville Giddings, Benjamin Andrew and Claire Lawrence picked up awards from Amanda Olley, Essex County Council's curriculum manager.

Mr Grenville Giddings, who attends a Tai Chi class, was chosen because of the determination he has shown in taking a full part in the course despite serious health issues.

Mr Andrew was a "significant participant" in his maths class and showed a willingness to help his tutor and his classmates.

Miss Lawrence has excelled in a number of levels in her dressmaking courses.

Bosses praised her for always being willing to try new techniques.

A spokesman for the organisation said: "Although we are choosing only three of countless dedicated adults, it is hoped that their success will provide encouragement to others.

"It really is never too late to learn, whatever your age or situation."

The awards are named in honour of Frank Brown, a Trustee of the charity since inception who died two years ago.
