COLCHESTER’s Labour leader has laughed off a threat to expose his behaviour and conduct by a mystery Twitter user claiming to be from activist group Anonymous.

The social media account called Anonymous Colchester sprang up on Sunday and posted a message aimed at long-serving councillor Tim Young demanding he withdraw his candidacy for the forthcoming election and resign.

The user behind the account claims they will “expose those who set out to profit at the expense of the citizens of Colchester.”

The post read: “We have been watching the local political events unfold with great interest.

“It has been brought to our attention the behaviour and conduct of Cllr Tim Young would be of particular interest to the residents of Colchester.

“We expect his resignation and withdrawal as a candidate by 5pm on April 13.

“We are watching.”

Anonymous is a group of activists which has become notorious for publicity stunts, attacks on government, religious and corporate websites.

Mr Young, who is standing for re-election in the Greenstead ward in the all-out elections next month, said he was aware of the threat but had absolutely nothing to hide and was not worried at all about the threat.

He said: “I have got no idea who it is and what they are going on about.

“I saw it but decided not to respond and certainly will not be resigning or withdrawing my candidacy.

“I have no idea what it is I am supposed to have done.”

The Gazette attempted to contact Anonymous Colchester but did not receive a response.
