A GROUP of top Tory MPs – including Witham’s Priti Patel and Maldon’s John Whittingdale – have joined the EU exit campaign.

The Essex pair have joined campaign group Vote Leave and will be backing efforts to see Britain leave the European Union.

It came after MP David Cameron announced an in/out referendum will be held on the decision on June 23.

Priti Patel and John Whittingdale made the move with fellow prominent Tories Michael Gove, Iain Duncan Smith, Chris Grayling and Theresa Villiers.

Chris Grayling spoke on behalf of the six when they arrived at the Vote Leave headquarters today.

He said: “The six of us who stand here today are committed to campaign for Britain to leave the European Union.

"This is going to be a team effort. It is not going to be Conservative effort, it is going to be a cross-party effort, it is going to involve people of all parties and none.

"But above all, it is a campaign to restore the sovereignty of our nation."
