INTERIM measures have been put in place following the sudden death of the Brightlingsea Harbour Master.

Commodore Stephen Chick died suddenly at home on Saturday aged 55 after what was believed to have been a heart attack.

He had been in the role for 18 months and before arriving in Brightlingsea, had embarked on a distinguished career in the Royal Navy.

The harbour commissioners met on Tuesday to decide the temporary management arrangements which will see David Boughton, who has recently been appointed the deputy harbour master, assuming operational harbour master duties.

Chairman of the harbour commissioners Jim Addison will become temporary executive chairman with oversight responsibilities for strategy and external relations.

Mr Addison said it was a tribute to Mr Chick’s hard work during his 18 months in the role that the changes were quite simple to bring about.

He said: “The commissioners have every confidence that David and his team will maintain the smooth and safe operation of the Harbour during this interim period.

“It is another tribute to Steve's legacy that such transitional arrangements, although not anticipated, were relatively straightforward to implement."

A book of remembrance has been opened and will be available for people to sign at the Colne Yacht Club during opening hours, and at other times in the harbour office.

The funeral service will be held at All Saints' Church on Movers Lane, Brightlingsea, and will be followed by a private cremation, details to be confirmed.

Family flowers only are requested.

Donations are to be divided between the RNLI and Seafarers UK The commissioners will be seeking a suitable replacement in due course.
