A TEENAGER put his chess skills to the test against players from around the globe at the national championships.

Adam Taylor, 17, has just returned home from Greece where he took part in the National Chess Championships.

His national ranking meant he expected to come 47th in the event, but his smart moves meant he came in 23rd place.

The Colchester Sixth Form student said: “It was quite hard work but it was enjoyable.

“There was a little bit of pressure because I wanted to do well.

“I was pleased with how I did.”

During the tournament he had to play 11 matches, winning six, drawing one and losing four. Players from 52 countries attended.

Adam, who lives in Trajan Close, Highwoods, Colchester, has been playing chess since he was nine.

He now plays nearly every day online, and this is the third time he has entered the championship.
