TALENTED teenage linguists have been performing a play entirely in French.

Audiences watching the sixth formers at Colchester Royal Grammar School have been aided by English subtitles projected above the on stage action.

The students have been performing Molière's Le Malade Imaginaire, a comedy written at a similar time to William Shakespeare's.

Those watching the performances included the grammar school's own pupils, and groups from other Colchester secondary schools.

An evening performance allowed parents to attend.

Ian Sydenham, the school's director of languages, said it was the first time subtitles had been used for a play in French at the school.

"It is the third French play we have done in the last three years and certainly the most ambitious," he added.

"I think the performers have got a lot out of it in terms of confidence in speaking French and everyone has commented on how well they have done in mastering the language."
