A COMPETITIVE couple went head to head in a Top Gear-style challenge when they raced to Belgium.

Danielle and Justin Southall took inspiration from the BBC show to make their journey to Danielle’s sister’s Alex’s wedding a bit more interesting.

Chef Justin, 28, drove in his Vauxhall Astra, while his wife used public transport and a micro scooter.

Danielle, 27, who works in customer services, said: “We joked about doing it after watching it on the telly and saying how much fun it would be.”

When Alex announced she was getting married in Yvoir, south Belgium, they realised they had the perfect opportunity and started researching routes.

The couple left their home, near Abbeyfields in Colchester, at 7am the day before the wedding.

Danielle rode her scooter through the town centre and to North Station to jump on a train to London, and then rode to St Pancras International Station and took the Eurostar to Brussels.

Justin drove his Vauxhall Astra to Dover and crossed the Channel on the Eurotunnel.

He arrived in Calais and drove across Belgium, getting stuck in traffic along the way.

Danielle arrived in Brussels and used her scooter to travel to the main train station.

She got two trains and then scooted the final stretch, to the hotel they were staying at for the wedding.

Danielle realised she was the winner when she called her husband minutes before she arrived, to find out he was still 45 minutes away.

She said: “There were a couple of people waiting for me on the bridge and cheering me on.

“We were doing it for fun but we’re both quite competitive so we both really wanted to win, and our friends were placing bets on.

“It wasn’t quite glamorous as it was on the TV but it was fun. I would recommend anyone to try one.”

They decided to raise money for Diabetes UK, as Danielle’s dad Steve and aunt Alison have the condition, and have raised £400.
