AN off-duty nurse came to the rescue after an elderly woman collapsed in Colchester town centre.

The male nurse was part of a group taking a heritage tour through the town with former MP Sir Bob Russell when he rushed to the aid of the woman.

He waited with the woman until an ambulance arrived.

It happened at about 10.40am on Saturday, at the junction of Lion Walk and Culver Walk.

Sir Bob said the eastern European nurse is currently working at Colchester General Hospital and signed up to take the tour to learn more about the area through his English language improvers course at Colchester Institute.

He added: “I was very impressed with the young nurse who gave immediate attention to the elderly lady.

“We waited until the ambulance arrived, he passed the casualty over to the ambulance crew, and then we all continued with the tour.”
