COLCHESTER MP Will Quince says he will set up a meeting between the company who wants to create a multi-million pound leisure park in Stanway and town centre traders.

The scheme would create about 1,000 jobs, but Mr Quince also wants to find a way for the move to help town centre traders.

The Tollgate Village plans have been submitted to Colchester Council by landowner the Tollgate Partnership for a 20-acre site, including land where the former Sainsbury’s store stood.

The proposals have attracted opposition from High Street business, including Culver Square and Lion Walk shopping centresandthe Williams&Griffin department store, all of whom have warned such a big out-of-town development could cause irreversible harm to the town centre.

Newly-elected Tory MP Mr Quince said: “Having met the directors of the Tollgate Partnership to discuss their plans, I am impressed by the potential to create 1,000 jobs.

“I will now try to facilitate a meeting between the town centre traders and Tollgate Partnership.

“I am sure there are areas where they could work together to identify ways any further development of Tollgate could be linked with the town centre withmutual benefit."
