Staff and customers at a seaside pub are waiting for the results of X-rays after fears they inhaled asbestos.

It is understood at least ten people were exposed to the potentially-deadly substance at the Royal Albion pub in The Parade, Walton.

Patrons and bar staff were helping to clear out the cellar when some were covered in asbestos dust from the ceiling and pipe lagging.

Their doctors sent them for X-rays.

Garry Overland, temporary manager, said the Club Bar has been closed and the cellar has been sealed.

He added the business is being affected because customers are staying away.

"I know people are frightened but anybody who has concerns can talk to me or their GP," he said.

"I am trying to keep in control of the situation and have done everything that environmental health has asked."

Nigel Brown, Tendring Council's communications manager, said an officer visited the Royal Albion after reports of asbestos being discovered and advised that a contractor should be brought in to have it removed.

The pub will be closed while the work is undertaken and it is due to start next week.

A spokesman for London-based Pubs and Bars, which runs the site, said the Health and Safety Executive has been informed and the situation is under control.
