Residents are warning others to be on their guard after their bank cards were cloned and hundreds of pounds was spent in Italy.
Nikki Evans, of Coke Street, Harwich, discovered her card had been cloned when she tried to use it to pay her mortgage.
She said: "Some people in Italy have been using my details and got money out of my account."
The thieves took £577 of Miss Evan's money.
"I phoned to pay my mortgage and they had to get authorisation from my bank."
"Chip and pin in shops is one thing, if they can attach things anywhere - is anywhere safe?" she added.
Miss Evans said her bank, the Natwest, had been really good.
