A new hygiene-rating scheme has been welcomed by food outlets in the Colchester area.
From now on, customers will be able to check out the food safety standards of restaurants, pubs, hotels, shops and takeaways, thanks to Colchester Council.
In the past the authority, which is responsible for inspecting hundreds of premises for food safety, has kept its scores to itself.
In the wake of recent legislation, including the Freedom of Information Act, it has decided to publicise its findings through a star scheme, similar to that used by well-known food guides.
The move has been greeted enthusiastically by businesses across the borough.
The information will be available on the Colchester Council website.
