Drivers who leave their cars on Colchester pavements are to be fined in a parking crackdown.

Police will put £30 fixed penalty notices on the windscreens of any vehicle causing an "unnecessary" obstruction.

It comes after residents in the High Woods and Myland areas complained they had to walk in the road because they couldn't squeeze past vehicles on pavements.

Sgt Lou Middleton, of High Woods, Myland and St John's neighbourhood policing team, said: "We have been getting a lot of complaints about people parking on pavements.

"In the new parts of High Woods, and up by the hospital, it really is a problem.

"We want to educate people about where they should park their car.

"In some cases we will send out warning letters and put leaflets on windscreens to alert car owners to the problem.

"In other cases we will be handing out fixed penalty notices, because it is an offence to cause an unnecessary obstruction on the highway."
