A man took pity on two "stranded" women - then had money stolen after they snatched at his wallet.
The kindhearted victim was walking in Colchester's Culver Square when he was approached by his assailants who said they needed money to get home.
The man pulled out his wallet and the pair made a grab for notes as he fumbled with change.
They ran off with about £20, but the victim gave chase only to have more bad luck when the duo broke his glasses after he challenged them in East Hill.
They were last seen heading out of town shouting "he's following us" at the top of their voices after the incident which happened on Sunday at about 9.30pm.
Now police are hunting the women, who are both said to be white and aged about 21.
