PARATROOPERS from Colchester are due to return to the Falklands Islands in June.

Third Battalion The Parachute Regiment were instrumental in winning the war in 1982, most particularly at Mount Longdon during the battle for Port Stanley.

During the summer tour they will be marking the 33rd anniversary of the war which killed 255 British soldiers and 649 Argentinians.

The posting is likely to inflame international relations with Argentina as 3 Para, and their colleagues in 2 Para at Goose Green, are widely regarded as being the forces which helped win the war and caused many of the Argentine casualties.

News of the deployment comes at the same time as The Sunday Express revealed British Special Forces have been carrying out security tests on the island amid fears Argentina may again try to claim sovereignty over the islands.

Additional Chinook helicopters have already been moved to help the garrison with tensions increasing.

An Army spokesman said: "Units from 16 Air Assault Brigade will be filling a routine role on the Falkland Islands as part of an ongoing rotation which has seen over 500 Infantry companies deployed since the end of the 1982 conflict."
