A CHARITY is celebrating after it sent its 60,000 bike to a new owner in Kenya.
Re-Cycle, based in Wormingford Grove, Colchester, takes unwanted bikes, refurbishes them and ships them to hard-up people in Africa.
The 60,000 bike was delivered to a 16-year-old orphan named Stephen, who lives in Mombasa, south-western Kenya.
Stephen who has lived on the streets from the age of ten, told Re-cycle: “I had never had a bike of my own, so I am very grateful and happy for being given this bike.”
The teenager also attended a street soccer programme run by Re-Cycle’s partner organisation in Kenya, Glad’s House, which has given him support, education and counselling.
The bike will enable Stephen to get around Mombasa quickly, and travel to and from school.
Re-Cycle gives the bikes to people in Africa to help them to start working for themselves.
Research has shown each bike shipped out by the charity ends up being used by as many as nine people, meaning the charity’s 60,000 cycles may have helped 360,000 people.
