A DAD-OF-TWO has vowed to complete the London Marathon solo – despite being almost blind.

Darren Baker, 46, has just ten degrees of vision left in each eye after being diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa more than 20 years ago.

But Darren, of Clacton, is determined to complete the London Marathon without anyone helping him.

“I could have had a guide runner, but I wanted to do it myself," he said.

“I know the condition is getting worse and one day I probably won’t be able to see very much, so I want to do it while I still can.

Darren, of Gilders Way, is running for the RP Fighting Blindness charity and aims to raise at least £2,000.

Wife Karen and sons Jamie, 12, and Sam eight, will be cheering him on in London on April 26.

“The reason it’s so important to him is because of the boys,” said Karen.

“We don’t know if they’ve got retinitis pigmentosa because they are too young to detect it, but Darren wants to raise as much as he can for research.”
