EXPERTS from around the country are gathering in Glasgow today to discuss how to improve the health of the city's children.

Obesity is top of the agenda at a special conference organised by the council, the healthboard and Glasgow University.

The forum, held at the Hilton Hotel, is the first of its kind to concentrate on the problems faced by youngsters in Glasgow.

Experts will also discuss issues of drugs, alcohol, diabetes, and self-esteem.

The city has some of the fattest children in Europe and experts predict the problem is set to worsen.

Professor John Reilly, Professor of Paediatric Energy Metabolism at Glasgow University, will tell delegates radical action is needed, while nutritionist Laura Stewart will explain the value of a healthy diet.

Ronnie O'Connor, the council's executive director of education, training and young people, said: "I am confident delegates will find this conference extremely valuable in informing the work they do in their own varied fields."
