A YOUNG couple are grieving for their nine-year-old daughter who died when the car driven by her mother was involved in a collision. Jessica Lindsay's stepfather said yesterday she was killed instantly in the crash involving her mother's vehicle and another. Tayside Police are seeking witnesses.

Mrs Lindsay, 27, a nurse at Sunnyside Royal Hospital in Montrose, and her 18-month-old child Charlotte were taken to Ninewells Hospital, Dundee but were released, having suffered only minor injuries. The other driver, aged in his 50s, was treated at Montrose Royal Infirmary. Speaking at his home in Provost Mitchell Road, Montrose, Andrew Watt, 34, Jessica's stepfather, was working on a North Sea oil installation when he was told the news. He said: "This is absolutely devastating. We are trying to come to terms with things. She was only nine years old."

Jessica was a pupil at Laurencekirk Primary School in Kincardineshire. Grandparents Pat and Ian Watt said: "When Andrew and Caroline got together, it was decided Jessica should carry on at Laurencekirk primary and stay with the same child minder."

A special assembly is due to be held at the school on Monday in Jessica's honour.
