Colchester's town centre and former port are to be linked by a path telling the area's history through art.
The Town to Sea Trail aims to introduce people, moving into the homes being built as part of the regeneration of the Hythe, to the area's past.
Schools and community groups will be working with a group of three artists to find 15 stories or places to highlight with works of art, with the walking and cycling route planned to open in October.
Clare Phillips, arts development officer for Colchester Council, said an "open brief" had been given to the artists involved, who hail from Wales.
"This is a project we advertised nationally because of its significance," she said.
- A public meeting is being held at the Hythe community centre, in Ventura Drive, at 5pm, on Monday, to discuss the project.
