A man jailed for 15 years in Cyprus was "tricked" into admitting causing the death of a moped rider, according to his family.

Relatives of Witham man Julian Harrington have vowed to continue to fight for justice against what they say was a trial by media - and revealed he is writing a book about his experiences.

The 39-year-old father was sentenced on Friday over the death of moped rider Christos Papiris, 17, and serious injuries suffered by his passenger, Marios Demetriou, 18, after his car was in collision with their bike last August.

His nephews, Luke Atkinson and Michael Binnington, were cleared of wilful manslaughter and grievous bodily harm.

Mr Harrington's fiancee, Maxine Scrivener, said: "They haven't had a fair trial. We will fight all the way. It's just so weird being home without him. I just expect him to pull up at any time."

He initially denied the charges but changed his plea.

"It's his one biggest regret he pleaded guilty. He did it for a lesser sentence and for the boys to come home and it didn't happen," said Miss Scrivener.

She said she was with Mr Harrington when their lawyer gave them just ten minutes to decide what to do.

Miss Scrivener, 38, said: "I didn't think they had enough evidence on Julian.

"I think the judge had made up his mind and tricked him into pleading guilty."

The family said claims the car had rammed the moped repeatedly or chased it down an alleyway were incorrect, and that the car was actually being chased by motorbikes and cars, following a fight at a Protaras nightclub.
