A shop owner was attacked and forced to hand over cash when robbers struck at his off licence.

The victim was attacked at Tim's Off Licence, in Freeland Road, Clacton.

A spokesman for Clacton police said the owner was just about to lock up, at 9pm on Friday, when two men entered the shop wearing dark clothing and balaclavas.

"One walked behind the counter and repeatedly punched the man."

He said the victim was forced to hand over hundreds of pounds of cash but his attacker continued to punch him.

"The victim managed to back himself into the store room and shut the door. The robbers tried to get into the store room being fleeing the scene," the spokesman said.

He said they made off down Freeland Road, towards the junction with Trafalgar Road, where a car was waiting.
