A MAN has admitted failing to protect animals in his care after more than 6,000 chickens died when temperatures at his farm soared.
Paul Flatman, 65, who owns Colchester’s Jumbo water tower, admitted three charges of not taking steps to make sure animals were protected from pain, suffering, injury and disease at Colchester Magistrates’ Court yesterday/Wednesday.
He also admitted three charges of not providing a suitable environment.
The court heard the three chicken houses at Flatman’s farm in Great Leighs were overcrowded.
On August 18 and 19 2012 temperatures soared to up to 36 degrees centigrade inside the houses, killing thousands of the birds.
