POLITICIANS will discuss whether to give the county council £185,000 to turnColchester’s streetlights back on overnight.
Colchester Council’s cabinet will debate a motion to take cash from this year’s underspend to get all lights switched back on between midnight and 5am.
Streetlighting is the county council’s responsibility, but Colchester Council is expected to offer the money to the authority to reverse the part-night lighting scheme for the town.
The move comes after Harlow Council agreed to pay County Hall £100,000 for streetlights to be switched back on, resulting in a 1.5 per cent council tax rise.
Colchester Council leader Martin Hunt, who declared after a full council meeting he wanted the lights back on to serve as his legacy, has agreed to put the issue to cabinet at Colchester Town Hall on March 18.
If passed, the funding will only cover the 2015/16 financial year and another decision will have to be made for the following year.
