FINAL preparations are being made for the Prince of Wales’s visit to Essex University.

Prince Charles will visit a Big Bang Event and an engineering workshop at the Wivenhoe campus on Tuesday.

Both events aim to raise the profile of Stem subjects – science, technology, engineering and mathematics – designed to address the need for more engineers and scientists.

A Clarence House spokesman said: “The Prince of Wales is keen to support and encourage manufacturing and engineering job opportunities and training.

“He has consistently undertaken visits to factories and businesses which rely on, and in turn support, training in manufacturing and engineering.”

The Big Bang Event will involve interactive stands, workshops, shows and careers information designed to show young people the hundreds of careers opportunities available to them if they study Stem subjects.

About 1,000 students will attend from 38 schools.

The engineering workshop is designed for headteachers to discuss what businesses can do to support schools to promote engineering to students and how businesses struggling to recruit engineers can be supported.

Two dozen representatives from engineering employers, including Atkins, National Grid and Network Rail will be there.

The workshop is being hosted by several of the Prince’s charities, which have joined forces with the Royal Academy of Engineering and Engineering UK.
