A village postmaster could retire from his job to secure the future of a post office he has run for 15 years.

The Earls Colne branch is in talks to move 300m away to the Fork ‘Andles hardware store and become an add-on to their business.

The move would include a full modernisation, seven-day opening and disabled access for customers, but would mean the current postmaster retiring from his role.

Postmaster of 15 years Keith Edwards, 62, said necessary upgrades could not be made to the current grade two listed building at 72 High Street but sinking profits could force it to close if it doesn’t move.

Mr Edwards said: “This will give the post office a long-term future as part of a thriving business rather than it surviving maybe another two years here.”

Owners of Fork ‘Andles, Peter and Jenny Lewis, say they are delighted to be involved.

Mr Lewis said: “We would love to have the post office here. Hopefully it will mean we can employ more people if it goes ahead.”
