LOW expectations and a legacy of ineffective teaching led to a secondary school’s exam failings, inspectors have found.

Thomas Lord Audley School, in Monkwick Avenue, Colchester, revealed this week that only 37 per cent of its pupils got five or more A* to C grades at GCSE, including English and maths.

The figure was down 10 per cent from last year, and 21 per cent down on 2012.

Ofsted rated the 700-pupil school as requiring improvement, the third lowest of four ratings, after a full inspection in April this year.

It carried out a follow-up visit earlier this month.

In a letter to headteacher Helena Boast, published yesterday, Ofsted said further action is needed to improve standards.
