Train service One is spending £500,000 on cleaning up carriages in an effort to address priorities raised by passengers.
The company is taking on an extra 26 employees to remove "deep-seated dirt" and improve the "on-train environment", while thousands of pounds is being spent on industrial machines to clean carpets and seats.
The new recruits will make sure carriages are cleaned more frequently and to a higher standard.
Rail conductors are also being encouraged to take "more ownership" of cleaning their trains by regularly removing litter as they pass through.
