Angry residents want a former school field to be designated as open space in a bid to stop a controversial development.
More than 30 concerned residents turned out at Tendring Council's Local Plan Inquiry at Weeley Council chambers yesterday.
They were in opposition to a developer's plans to build on open space at the back of the former Windsor School site, in Holland Road, Clacton.
Carl Symes, managing director of Cosy Developments, objected to the council's local plan, which guides planning in the district until 2011, and called on the local plan inspector, Bryan Stead, to consider designating the site as residential land.
A committee of residents from east Clacton, who are fighting to preserve the land, said they wanted to see the open space safeguarded for the use of the community.
