Former Essex County Council leader suspended from the Lords

Gazette: Former Essex County Council leader suspended from the Lords Former Essex County Council leader suspended from the Lords

FORMER Essex County Council leader Lord Hanningfield should be suspended from the House of Lords for the remainder of the current parliament over his claims for daily allowances, a committee has said.

The Lords Privileges and Conduct Committee said the peer - who was jailed in 2011 over his parliamentary expenses - should face the maximum sanction after he was found to have claimed the allowance for 11 days on which he did no parliamentary work.

The committee recommended Lord Hanningfield should repay the £3,300 which he had wrongly claimed.

Following a complaint, the Lords Commissioner for Standards, ex-Hampshire chief constable Paul Kernaghan, carried out an inquiry focusing on 11 days in July 2013 when he spent less than 40 minutes in the parliamentary estate.

"Lord Hanningfield was unable to point to any specific work that he had undertaken on the 11 days covered by the commissioner's investigation," the committee said.

So this is only a recommendation that he should be suspended for a very short time. When will this suspension be confirmed? and why not strip this convicted thief of his peerage altogether?

Not only is the House of Lords totally outdated with unelected members but they continue to content themselves by allowing all manor of thieves and convicted criminals into the house, so they can continue to sponge off the rest of us without fear of proper sanctions.

Angela Smith is the best. Campaigned for the abolition of an UNELECTED House of Lords then gets herself in there as "Baroness" Basildon.. on a £300 a day screw. Nice work if you can get it eh?

Then you get the Labour lot whingeing about the Tories when they're just as bad.

How can dropping into the House of Lords to pick up a box of paperclips possibly justify a £300 payout.. I am using this analogy because the £300 a day is an ATTENDANCE fee.. it doesn't specify that you actuall have to do much or be there all day.

Disgusting. So much hypocrisy.

However, not all county councillors are on the fiddle. There are some UKIP who don't claim expenses or eat the plush dinners on offer at County Hall courtesy of the taxpayer.

Don't forget that in addition to their £300 a day they claim back the cost of getting to "work" and get a heavily subsided restaurant and bar which Mr White looks to take regular advantage of.

I have had personal dealings with Mr White and I can honestly say with hand on heart he is a lovely chap.
He is born under the star sign of Virgo and you do not get many bad Virgo males.
He is a champion of people at the bottom end of the pile and he knew how to kick ar*e and get things done.
I do not see you lot berating all these bankers and the bonuses, drugs and women, Flash Cars and holidays at their customers expense.
Paul White did a lot more for us than he ever got back in paltry expenses.
I cannot understand this witch hunt at all

You must be a very rich man to describe his FRAUDULENT (you missed that word out) expense claims as 'paltry'. Hanningfield has brought, what you describe as a 'witch hunt' on himself by his arrogance and failure to accept that what he did was wrong.
