Police are appealing for people to think if anyone they know has come on Friday or Saturday with blood on them or injuries. Police are also asking people to check whether any knives are missing from their kitchen.
Police are trying to race a man who was seen lying in Castle Park at about 1.30am. He was conscious and able to answer a passerby. It is not clear if this was Mr Attfield.
DCI Werrett described the attack as violent and frenzied and said it is one of the most brutal murders he has dealt with.
Police are not sure whether there was one attacker or more. Mr Atffield was last seen in River Lodge just after 10pm and they are trying to trace his last movements.
