Firefighters have rescued a man from a flat fire.
Three fire engines were sent to Newland Street, Witham, around 7pm on Monday after the fire broke out in the flat above a shop.
When they arrived, the flat was heavily smoke-logged and a man was inside.
A spokesman for Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said: "He was brought to safety and left in the care of the Ambulance Service.
"Police were also at the scene."
The fire was out after 30 minutes and then crews used a high pressure fan to clear the flat of smoke.
A joint police and fire service investigation will be carried out to establish the cause.
