‘Don’t give to out-of-tune carol singers’

Gazette: Don’t give to out-of-tune carol singers (not these ones) say police Don’t give to out-of-tune carol singers (not these ones) say police

POLICE are warning residents not to give cash to out-of- tune carol singers.

Officers said there have been a number of calls to the police about a group of bad singers asking homeowners to cough up cash in the Clacton area.

PC Dan Heard, from Brightlingsea police station, is concerned they may be targeting the vulnerable.

He said: “A few people have been knocking on doors, singing badly and then trying to get money for the performance.

“Obviously, it is a bit of worry if they are getting money, especially off the vulnerable.

“By the descriptions given to us it certainly doesn’t seem to be legitimate carol singers, as you would expect them to have a bit of tinsel, some candles and maybe a song or a hymn sheet.”

PC Heard, who tweeted his followers on social networking website Twitter to warn them about the dodgy singers, said the out of tune culprits are described as being “scruffy”.

Talk about scruffy, most of the local police walk around with their hands in their pockets, flourescent jackets undone, no headgear and propped up against a doorway or other supporting architecture. Wouldn't have happened in my day!!!

Doesn't seem to be any pride in ones appearance these days in Essex Police!

Some carollers don't even sing at all. A car with a trailer carrying a lit-up Santa and sleigh moved along our street this evening, making a huge racket, and then there was the inevitable knock on the door, from someone claiming to be from Colchester Round Table, rattling his collection box. I asked why they didn't sing themselves, and he claimed their voices weren't good. I put some money in his box, but less than I would have done if they had actually been singing.

Colchester Round Table have been doing their Christmas Charity Collection runs for decades and have a street collection licence from the Council.

If in doubt ask to see it - any genuine charity collector should be able to show you this.
