A man on licence from prison threw caustic soda in a father's face and stabbed him, a court heard.
Douglas Salmon subjected Matthew Smith to the "horrific" attack in front of his two-year-old son and partner just 12 days after being released from prison for drugs offences.
Salmon threw the toxic liquid into his victim's face when he opened his front door to him on June 14.
Salmon, 30, kicked his victim to the floor and jumped on him, threatening to kill him as he rained punches on his body.
Chelmsford Crown Court heard Salmon then attacked Mr Smith with the knife as he sat with his arms covering his face.
The court heard Salmon was caught after drinkers heard him bragging about the attack in the Queen's Head, Clacton, later the same day.
Salmon, of Dudley Road, Clacton, admitted causing grievous bodily harm and was jailed on Friday.
Samantha Lee, mitigating, said Salmon had "two personas" and needed to undo 19 years of drugs misuse.
