Council chiefs have drawn up guidelines for redeveloping the ground after the U's move into their new stadium on the outskirts of town.
About 90 houses and flats are expected to be built on the site. But a section of the hallowed turf looks likely to be saved from the bulldozers as a reminder of almost a century of football at Layer Road.
