A MOTORCYCLIST has been injured in a crash on the A12.

The incident happened around 11.40am on Friday near to the Weston Homes Community Stadium in Colchester.

It has happened on the southbound carriageway. Traffic is moving slowly.

An East of England Ambulance Service spokesman said they were on their way to the scene.

Updated 1pm: An ambulance service spokesman said one patient had suffered serious injuries and was being airlifted to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge.

Updated 1.55pm: A police spokesman said: "A motorcyclist has been seriously injured following a road crash on the A12 near Great Horkesley.

"The collision happened when the rider of a black and silver Yamaha appears to have lost control of the machine whilst travelling southbound shortly before 11.30am and slid across the carriageway.

A section of the road was closed for an hour while the motorcyclist was treated for his injuries and airlifted to Cambridge's Addenbrooke's Hospital after sustaining serious leg, hand and pelvic injuries.

"He is in a stable condition.

"Debris was also cleared from the carriageway."
