Spending a penny in comfort is set to cost Tendring Council nearly £5 million.
A council report has revealed the cost of upgrading the public toilets in the district will cost more than £4.8 million.
It comes just days after a block of toilets on Clacton seafront was closed after engineers discovered cracks in the walls.
Tendring Council runs more than 40 public conveniences but the latest survey found more are considered to be "fair or poor" than "good or satisfactory".
