Workmen have uncovered what is thought to be an escape tunnel from an historic Martello Tower.
The work was being carried out at the car park in Station Road, Walton, which is at the top of Martello Road.
The Martello towers dot the coast and were built as a defensive measure against a Napoleonic invasion.
The tunnels were built in case the towers were over-run or there was an explosion in the battery.
